Funding for Windthrow Harvesting Training
Safetree has secured funding for contractors and workers undertaking Windthrow harvesting to receive refresher training. The risk of Windthrow trees caused by Cyclone Gabrielle is very serious and we are concerned about the rush to start windthrow work with workers lacking in the proper training and experience. If you are interested in accessing the funding for windthrow training, please complete an expression of interest.
Video on Harvesting Windthrow Timber
We have also uploaded a ‘Harvesting Windthrow Timber‘ section to the Safetree website, which includes some spectacular old footage of windthrow events and technical information on cutting wood under tension.
Paying workers for travel time
Travel time is something that has been coming up as an issue recently. A reminder that workers should get paid for travel to and from the worksite. This advice is based on the silviculture case from 2018.
Safetree Register
If you’re a Safetree Certified Contractor, you should be listed on the Safetree Certification Register. The Register is promoted through various channels and the goal is to ensure it is the primary source of harvesting and silviculture contractors in New Zealand.
Forestry Fatality
It is with sadness that we report the details of the forest fatality that occurred on Monday 27 March in the Whanganui area. WorkSafe investigations are continuing but it seems as though it was a tree driving incident. Everyone who works in the forest deserves to come home at the end of the day. Our thoughts are with the whanau, loved ones and crew of the deceased.
We can only get better with feedback. If you have any suggestions or thoughts on Safetree Certification then please email us on certification@safetree.nz or call 0800 SAFE 123 (7233 123)
