Safety Alert: Trees Falling on Vehicles
With many regions getting record rainfall this winter it’s no wonder that we’re hearing about rain-related incidents on sites. This includes incidents of trees on rain-sodden hillsides falling onto cars.
In the past there has been a fatality from a tree falling on a car. So, we’ve put together a short Safety Alert on ways to manage this risk.
Please print it out and share it with teams and crews, and encourage them to discuss it at tailgates and team meetings.
Featured Safetree Certified Contractor: Mike Hurring Logging & Contracting and NZ’s First Hybrid Harvester
Sharing stories is a great way for people in forestry to learn from each other’s experiences. That’s why we try to share as many industry stories as possible, particularly from Safetree Certified Contractors.
Our latest story is about Mike Hurring Logging and Contracting in Balclutha, which has begun operating New Zealand’s first diesel-electric harvesting machine. Not only is the machine cheaper to run and better for the environment, it has some great health and safety features.
Mike’s using this hybrid harvester in a production thinning crew, paired up with a forwarder, and is extracting wood that in the past would have been left as waste. Good for the environment, people and business.
Thanks to Josh Hurring for telling the company’s story.
Reaching Workers: Safetree on TikTok
Getting health and safety information out to crews can be challenging. So to build connections with workers, Safetree is trialling a TikTok page.
In true TikTok style, some of our clips are just a celebration of the good things that go on every day on forestry sites around the country. But the consistent message behind them all is the strong link between good work practices and good health and safety.
Early signs are that these short, entertaining videos are hitting the mark with workers. We’ve had about 30,000 views already and are getting lots of engagement and comments.
Reminder: Get on the Contractor Register to go in the Draw
All Certified Contractors on the Safetree Certified Contractor Register by 31 August go into the draw to win 1 of 5 $100 Hunting and Fishing vouchers. Remember, just because a crew is certified doesn’t automatically mean they are on the Register. They need to sign up.
