Worker engagement, participation and representation

(HSWA) Reinforces the need for employers to work with their employees to ensure health and safety in the workplace.

This includes taking steps to:

  • ensure workers are engaged in deciding what health and safety issues to tackle in the workplace
  • give workers reasonable opportunities to participate in improving health and safety
  • encourage representation by supporting the election of a health and safety representative (as a high-risk industry, forestry businesses must do this if a worker volunteers for the role), and
  • set up a Health and Safety Committee if a health and safety representative, a group of workers or the business believes it will improve workplace health and safety.

Like much of HSWA, good forestry operators are doing these things already. See this two-page document for more information.
